Flea Market Finds: Ceramic Tyrannosaurus Rex

Ceramic Tyrannosaurus

I’m not really “into” dinosaurs, per se. I mean, yeah, my collection of Japanese toys does feature some creatures that qualify as dinosaur-like but actual, regulation dinosaurs? Not so much, thanks.

That being said, when I spotted this little fellah in the “collectibles” case of the local Goodwill, I had to take a closer look.

The Case(s) of Renewed Interest

September 21st, 2010 by Corey A. Edwards

a closeup of the long, glass case

6 years ago, when I was in the thick of toy collecting, I ran across a couple of very surprising deals: two glass display cases, to be exact. Low, old-school, wood and glass display cases. And at the right price: free.

Kanegon

March 13th, 2010 by Corey A. Edwards

So it turned out that the neighbor severed my cable while planting a tree.

He was nice enough to leave the cable ends protruding from the earth like giant, errant whiskers but otherwise said nothing.

He’s in construction, natch.

Namegon

A giant snail. What’s cooler than that?

My picture of it, that’s what.

Aboras

Aboras

One of the last toys I ever bought, the Bandai, B-Club reissue of the Bullmark Aboras was long sought.

Something about this toy’s whimsical grin (at least on one side, the other side of his face is rather unfriendly, as if the sculptor was of two moods during the process … or just inept) has always pleased me to no end.

The toy has spent the last few months perched on a living room stereo speaker (the only figure toy in evidence in my home proper) in the hope that it would inspire me.

It has. I hope you like the results as much as I do – more of the same is on the way.

Nostalgic Heroes “Tetsujin 26”

I wonder – was he riding that bike or does he just maintain it?

If the former, then how does he get around the deck support? Was he assembled down there?

Mebbe there’s another egress …

Bandai “Hanejiro”

This was a very simple set-up, as I’m sure you can imagine: A basic head-on with lots off diffuse light on my subject, then a simple two-part layer of the wall and a slight mask of the window to insert the toy.

So simple I almost felt like I was cheating.

For a final effect, I cut out a large section of the top window, which I applied to Hanejiro via a clipping mask, then brought said layer’s opacity down until the toy looked like it was behind the window.

A little bit of stenciling to include my sig and: voila.

I may like this shot best of the three I did this weekend even thought it was so danged easy: the unexpected, goofy charm of Hanejiro’s face up in the window … it perfectly embodies my attitude and aim when making these ridiculous pics …

Medicom RAH “Dada”

I’ve had this shot (hell, all this week’s outside shots) for a long time and have “published” a few of them before, sans toys of course.

B-Club “Zarab Seijin”

I’m not quite sure how this happened. Something about a request for me to come up with another calendar of toy pics and then my realizing, for the first time since I put one together, that I didn’t have 12 new pictures.

Somehow … back at it.

B-Club “Daigoro”

The next thing you know I’m paging through old backgrounds and snapping pictures of a toy, my mind awhirl with projects, themes, and other forms of sheer pointlessness.

It’s this kind of stuff that “holds me back” and ensures that I’ll never “make it.”

But you know what? I don’t really care anymore. They’re just too fun to make.

(my daughter says he needs a package)

Chiburu Chiburu Chiburu (no pepsi: coke)

October 25th, 2009 by Corey A. Edwards

In case it isn’t clear, I love me some Chibull.

Of all the toys I own, I think I’ve shot more images of the Chibull than any other.

X-ray

September 30th, 2009 by Corey A. Edwards

Here’s a neat little chunk of javascript (click the pic!) I discovered recently (and by that I mean on the net, not by writing it).

This is an admittedly lame use of it, given all the ideas learning of it has generated in me. My daughter and I are in the middle of a project together using said script in a far more creative way that I will reveal here as soon as it is complete.

The script is marketed as a magnifier, not as an x-ray. I like it better as an x-ray. Or whatever it is I have it doing here.

Stay tuned!

Egads.

December 2nd, 2008 by Corey A. Edwards

Leave it to my friend Shlomo Jimmy to turn me on to something that is at once cool, interesting, unnerving, and, in it’s present form at least, utterly useless.

Impressed as I am by their graphic work, I’d be a lot more impressed if she bit at the cursor when you clicked it near her mouth – or blinked and teared up if you managed to click right on her eye. Is it just me or do her eyes look red? Late nights on a computer? Cannabis? Bad design choice?

They’re missing another bet, too: how long before we get a fluffy, little kitten that swipes at your cursor? That’d be more popular than some vaguely conscious girl

The Necessary Year – Day 1: Butterflies and Vcolor

June 1st, 2008 by Corey A. Edwards

(this post is part of an aborted 1 year experiment in material abstinence I called The Necessary Year)

I’m feeling optimistic but also a bit nervous. Thinking about doing something is one thing, committing to it publicly is another. This reminds me of when I told my daughter I would quit smoking, right then: well, you’re committed now! Here’s to hoping this goes off as smoothly as that did.

As a kind of “last supper” I walked down the hill last night and picked up a bottle of Sheaf stout and some Toll House ice cream sandwiches. I drank the beer with supper (so good and creamy!) but became so embroiled in getting this blog up that I forgot about dessert! I guess I can save them for later – unless my daughter beats me to them.

School Daze

October 24th, 2006 by Corey A. Edwards

this blog began as a section on my site called “Infinite Diarrhea” which I took down very shortly after starting it because … people were reading it. This, in turn, was causing problems in my already failing marriage …

School is finally getting interesting (read: challenging) and I am finding myself actually sitting up and paying attention.
