So I’m in San Francisco last weekend with a buncha danged professionals and I’m feeling the odd man out. (I mean I felt strange in their company. Get your mind out of the gutter)
Anyway, they’ve all got nice cars, successful careers, wallets full of cash, and really great clothes. Especially the shoes. Every one of these bastards has what appears to be a brand new pair of shoes on their feet – sneakers or leathers – that probably cost more than my diet since September, and there I was in my four year old, beat to shit, steel-toed, brown hiking boots with obvious, whisker-like black laces. The original, brown ones were worn out and all I had were these stiff black things that I stupidly decided to replace the others with just before the trip.

In the dream I am surfing on a baguette pan like the kind I use at my new job. Sometimes it’s a four-channel pan and sometimes it’s a six but the four-channel works better because the wheels are bigger and not as recessed (which is interesting because baguette pans don’t have wheels).

When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I worked first as a janitor for Hewlett Packard and then, some time later, as a security guard.
The first job, a delight of mop buckets, floor buffers, and trash bags, had a shift that ran from 7pm to 3:30 in the morning. It was an odd schedule but not too hard to get used to. Besides, I only lasted three months at the job.

No matter what we do, every year dad gets a little older. Ronnie took him round to hospital to see about the condition but they couldn’t help. Said it had something to do with the passage of time and his age. Despite what amounts to a rather hasty pronouncement, if you ask me, we’ve tried a number of experimental pills, powders, injections, suppositories, and salves, but they only make dad nauseous, sneezy, tender, squirmy, and greasy. It’s sad, really. We just celebrated his 79th and he could barely stay awake long enough to finish baking the cake. We had to eat it without him. What can you do?

I seem to be the most creative when I’m happiest and vice versa.
I suppose this follows. What makes you happier than being in the midst of a creative project?
The downside is that, when times are tough, my muse deserts me. It’s a little like how, when stressed, some of us contract stress-related illnesses, which add to the stress (which is a damned stupid system, if you ask me).

I first stumbled across The Monks of Doom in the late 90’s while on an Edward Gorey tear via eBay.
The Monks of Doom were one of the few groups that had put Gorey’s mad genius to music at the time. When I realized that the same group had also covered Syd Barrett and Frank Zappa – on the same disc! – I just about swallowed my gum: here was a group of musicians speaking to people like … me! Wow!

Most of the year I think of myself as an optimist but, as the new year approaches, its awful, preceding holiday extends a pair of ragged talons, hungry to rend the fabric of my cheery façade: New Year’s Eve.
I find it odd that I don’t remember any New Year’s Eve celebrations from my youth – and no, not because I was wasted. I’m talking about when I was but a kid: between the ages of birth to 17 or so.

It’s an older gag but the sentiment remains – hope you’re porking a loved one under your tree right now.

The mystery is solved: according to a coworker, the corporation I am presently employed by and whom is also in control of the songs I hear while under said employ, is using The Bellamy Brothers song “Let Your Love Flow” as the background music in a televised advertising campaign.

I feel like I am in a time warp.
A little more than 12 months ago, I was starting out as the creative director for a perfect-bound, glossy-paper magazine; a salaried professional.
Sure, the magazine was ridiculously small but we produced a product that made people think we were a lot larger than we were. The quality of the paper, the pictures, the subject matter, the clean layout; surely it was upward for both myself and the magazine.
Heh heh … right.

I was cruising for burgers on FrankZappa.com and ran across this video – it’s pretty funny and the Dinah Moe Humm part had me laughing out loud, so I wanted to share it.

The first time I was ever made aware of Frank Zappa, it was 1985 or so and I was shopping for records (cassettes, actually) at a surprisingly decent mall store in Fort Collins, Colorado.
One of the employees, a doughy, little nebbish of a guy named “Ralph,” if I’m not mistaken, engaged me in a conversation regarding the actions of the Parents Music Resource Center, which had only recently succeeded in plastering the following graphic all over parts of America’s pop-culture:

Between the holidays, freelance, and my part-time job, I am finding little to no “Corey” time, thus the lack of entries here.
Fear not, I shall strike a balance (likely after Christmas) and resume posting, soon.
Thanks for reading and Happy Holidays, ever’body!

Around five years ago I went through a phase of interest in “Outsider Music:” music composed and performed by folks who know exactly what they’re doing, even if no one else does.
This is music that is not purposefully strange, such as the kind of thing Frank Zappa might do, but music that is pure in its difference because the source isn’t consciously attempting to be odd. (Irwin Chusid’s “Songs In The Key Of Z” book and accompanying cd’s are a wonderful intro to the concept)
Daniel Johnston is one of the more famous purveyors of this “outsider music,” most of his songs containing an accessible pop strain that distracts you from his psychosis and often somewhat broken, lo-fi delivery.

A couple of weeks or so ago I started a short writing project for this blog.
At first it was intended as just a single post, then it grew into something that, out of kindness to my hapless readers, I would have cut into separate parts but in the end I realized I shouldn’t post at all.

I go back and forth on Adrian Belew: some of the music he has put out is absolutely brilliant, other things are a real affront to my ears.
I do have a pretty good way of figuring out, before hearing a piece of his, whether I’ll like it or not: If it’s instrumental, I’m interested. If it has lyrics, I’m extremely wary. (of course, that’s my attitude with music, in general) That being said, the man can write the occasional set of lyrics that work for me. This week’s song is such.
