Wrote A Song (instrumental version) – demo track

The instrumental version of “Wrote A Song” is actually a rejected attempt at a tongue in cheek approach to a song that’s already tongue in cheek …

“Wrote A Song” is all about the simplicity of pop music. It came about as a personal challenge to write a song based around the typical pop form. I closed my eyes, threw a dart, and hit a video of “Pretend We’re Dead” by L7. This was my (very) loose template.

I’ve posted the lyrics here before.

Wrote A Song lyrics

I wrote a song
it isn’t very good
I couldn’t find a rhyme
for every wood
I cannot play it
like I oughta should but

I wrote a song
I wrote a song, man!
I wrote a song,
a really real song!

My song has lyrics and
right around 3 chords
I didn’t try that hard
won’t win no awards
Verse chorus verse, man
I’m getting bored – but

I wrote a song,
I wrote a song, yeah!
I wrote a song,
a total killer song!

(solo/bridge section)

Some other words
would probly fit in here
but I’m just thinking
how I want a beer
something something
something something beer, yeah

I wrote a song
I wrote a song, man!
I wrote a song,
maybe a hit song!

I wrote a song
I wrote a song, man!
I wrote a song,
a really great song!

I wrote a song
I wrote a song, yo!
I wrote a song
Yeah-yeah a song!
(repeat until someone throws a boot)

Aftermath

Once the lyrics were written and I’d played it out a couple of times as a chuckle, I pretty much forgot about the song. I never really intended to produce it. Not really.

Then I was working on the “Bopped Out Steel Pluckers Havin’ A Bash” model kit from Hawk Model Company and I realized the song would be perfect for the updated, punk version of them I was doing.

The theme I was working with was rural punks with banjo, acoustic guitar, and a serious DIY attitude. Consequently, I wanted my song to have some funky drum machine action.

Drum machines are my curse. Not only do I find working with them clunky and unmusical but once I do get going, I can tumble down a rabbit hole of the possibilities they offer. The drums in the instrumental version of “Wrote A Song” display that aplenty.

I eventually created a much simpler and more traditional drum track for the model version of the song. This version was set aside as an amusing anecdote. Running across it while exploring my working archives, I decided what the heck?

This version is a real anomaly yet, in some ways, is tamer than what I ended up with for the model. I’m eager to release that one as well but want to finish the model, first. Unfortunately, my efforts on the model have hit a snag … someday!
