“Erroneous Bosch” started out as noodling, grew into a theme, and then spent around 8 months in the “fiddly” stage. I even gave up on it for a while and woulda likely forgotten it had my wife not said: “that’s good, why aren’t you working on that?”
Why, indeed?
The answer is that I saw it more as a self-indulgent exercise. A “where can I go with this?” or, more accurately, “where will this take me?”
“Erroneous Bosch” is what I tend to think of as a “studio-improv,” even though it is far more planned than improvised. It is based upon a simple riff, which is then expanded, as the ideas occur.
In many ways, the process was reminiscent of creative writing. That situation during the process when the characters or plotline take over, and tell me where they are going, rather than vice versa.
Erroneous Bosch?
Clearly the title is a play on the name of the 16th century Dutch painter, Hieronymus Bosch.
Did you know that “Hieronymus” corresponds to “Jerome?” I didn’t. Anyway, I’ve always liked Jerome’s paintings and something about the development of this piece reminded me of his “Garden of Earthly Delights” triptych.
And that’s how this musical bash became a Bosch.
I considered a variety of puns on the forename before setting on “Erroneous:” “Eponymous,” “Ominous,” “Homonymous,” etc. “Erroneous” won out as it so well describes the composition and musicianship.
The Video
Given that I have another piece on the way with the working title of “Just Walkin’,” using this footage was probably a little stupid.
After the hallucinatory video I created for “Just What You Want,” however, I felt a little contrast was needed. How about an autumn walk followed up by some pet lovin’? Don’t mind if I do.
The real reason behind the merging of this music and footage is that I have a video shortage over here and am scrambling just to keep up. You’re lucky it wasn’t a video of my cluttered desktop.
Oooooh – now there’s an idea!
