Revell & Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s ‘Angel Fink’ plastic model – reissue by Atlantis Toy and Hobby Inc.
Angel Fink is a small, simple kit with lots of fun detail. That being said, there was a lot of flashing on the pieces. This was a particular hassle on the snake, and I ended up spending a lot of time cleaning off flashing.
The kit’s color was also unimpressive. I prefer a neutral tone as a base and found the green kind of obnoxious. Despite these gripes, everything worked out in the end.
I started off this kit with almost no color scheme in mind. I knew I wanted the snake to be “rattler” colored and that was it. Would Angel Fink be green? Purple? Fleshy? What color would the cloak be? I scanned the ‘net for inspiration, as usual, but still came away mostly blank.
In the end, the kit just kind of came together in front of me, not at all unlike writing a short story. I slapped a lot of the base colors down as default and went from there. Despite this, I think it came out looking pretty cool.
Modifications To The Kit
As I say, this was a very simple kit. The only real “customizing” I did was to the Nitro can.
I had an old, 3-color LED unit set aside that I shaved down to fit inside the Nitro can. Then I lightly sprayed some black paint on a small puff of fiberfill and put it on top of the LED unit to represent rising vapor.
I toyed with (and really should have) cutting out the bottom of the Nitro Can base so that button on the bottom of the LED unit could be easily accessed. Instead, I just slid it down inside the can and it can be activated by pressing down on it through the fiberfill. The kit’s hydrometer (the thermometer looking thing) works well for this purpose.
“Big Daddy” Roth’s Angel Fink
This was my first Ed “Big Daddy” Roth model kit and I really enjoyed the detail, especially the warty hands.
I’ve another “Big Daddy” Roth model kit in the stack and am keeping an eye out for a few of the others. I really hope Atlantis reissues more of them, soon.
