\"Spider<\/a>In the shower
\nin the wall
\non the plastic shell shelf
\nof the shower stall
\nI spy thee, spider leg <\/p>\n

Masquerading as a hair
\nlike so many of mine
\non the soap cake, there
\nbut bent at knobby knee
\nscythe angle, not a curl
\nhinting at
\nits nature true:
\nNot of me but some other
\nmost namely
\nyou
\nup there, overhead
\nyour spindly pins busy spinning
\nyour winnings, now dead
\nI read with my eyes
\namong your bundles and mess
\nthat, of your body\u2019s long branches
\nyou\u2019re now one less<\/p>\n

And yon spider leg,
\nhow you trigger recognition
\nthough mind’s picture contrasts
\nwith your current disposition
\nAt last look still connected
\nDid you not on occasion
\nseem to wave down at me?
\nHalloo! and Ahoy!
\nWatch me spin and deploy
\nmy gossamer threads
\nmy sticky skein
\nHello there, bather
\nhow have you been?<\/p>\n

Did you think me rude
\nnot waving back
\none eye on you
\nas I soaped and blustered
\ndown in the spray
\nrubbing and lathering
\nday’s proof away?<\/p>\n

Oh, I watched
\nand permitted
\nForgave and forswore
\nengaging in man’s endless
\npesticide war
\nAnd how many times,
\nyes, how often have I
\nushered you safely
\nout of harm\u2019s way?<\/p>\n

Not a smoosher, I
\nnor a flusher be
\nLo, I gently escort
\nfly, spider, and slug
\nfrom my home
\nmy lunch, my shower
\neach critter and bug
\nthat might roam
\nbuzz or glower
\nset outside and free
\nWhether they threaten
\nand rattle
\nor cower and beg
\nand yet here
\nis the payoff:
\none lone, loose
\nspider leg
\ndropped like so much litter
\na careless body-part leaf
\nhere in my shower
\nby the soap bar, dripping
\nno longer kicking
\nyet giving me grief<\/p>\n

Oh spider akimbo
\nyou, jumble of legs
\nknitting your attic
\nof the soon-sucked dead
\nWith one limb less now
\ndo you stumble in your jig
\nor is seven much simpler
\nfor your death-weaving gig?<\/p>\n

And if in the future
\na leg should come free
\nlet me ask
\ncould you bundle it
\nup with those
\nmummies I see
\nnot set it adrift
\non the misty upwellings
\nof moist heated air
\nto perhaps and perchance
\nin this sudsy dwelling
\ncome and land
\nin what is left of my hair?<\/p>\n
