I spent five years in the early\/mid 2000’s working at a new age bookstore. While I met some good people during my time there, made some good friends, found many good books and gew-gaws, the bulk of it was spent shaking my head in pained disbelief. A person of my spirituality (zilch) does not belong in such a place but I have to admit I learned a lot about human behavior and got a lot of material. Here is a smidgen from one of my notebooks of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Plastic Personal<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eyes closed
\nlips pursed intent
\nthe pudgy fingers peck
\nand pluck
\nat the bowl of cards
\nWhich one will
\nfate place in her hands
\nfor her eyes
\nand heart
\nto tell her
\nher mind?
\nThe card says:
\nFocus<\/p>\n

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wishing wells
\nand ringing bells
\neenie meenie miney moe
\npendulum tell me
\nwhat I already know:
\nIt Will Happen!<\/p>\n

The Psychic<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDo I have any appointments today?\u201d<\/p>\n

Wisdumb<\/strong><\/p>\n

$5 for a small, polished
\nrock scribed with the
\nword \u201cMONEY\u201d purchased
\nin the hope that it
\nwill bring the buyer more
\nof what they throw away<\/p>\n

Crystal Clear<\/strong><\/p>\n

Crystals
\nculled and collected
\nraped and reaped
\nshaped and shipped
\npriced and placed
\nbefore eyes that sparkle back
\nfrom faces fascinated
\nby the faceted facade
\nNow held high and tight
\nin\u00a0light for sighs
\nor hot to heart
\nlike a baby cradled
\nwith mama gooey cooing
\nover the aura farce force
\nthat courses deep within
\nthe perceiving mind:
\nA find!
\nShiny metal and green paper
\nor brittle bright plastic
\nchanges sleight of hands
\nCrunch out to the car
\nnot far with
\npaper bag a-crinkle
\nThat smile but a wrinkle
\nacross a blank head
\nwide with wonder
\nand under fed
\nBeneath the feet
\nnative earth
\nNo worth
\nignored abhorred:
\nGood lord …<\/p>\n

Self-Helpless<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the least helpful and
\noxymoronic\u00a0items in the universe:
\nThe self-help book.
\nIf the\u00a0person was capable of learning
\nthrough instruction\/observation
\nby themselves
\nthey would not need the book –
\nthus they do not need the\u00a0book
\nnor could they use it if they did.<\/p>\n

Self-help books only\u00a0help two kinds of people:
\nauthors and publishers of self-help books.<\/p>\n

For Mother Earth<\/strong><\/p>\n

Q: Do you have any small, round crystals?
\nA: Round? What color?
\nQ: Any color – brown, grey, black: whatever. Pea size.
\nA: \u00a0Perfectly round? Polished? Do you know the name of the crystal?
\nQ: They don’t have to be perfect. They can be rough, uneven. Just regular crystals.
\nA: Pebbles?
\nQ: Yes, exactly. Like that. I want them for a picture I am making for Mother Earth.
\nA: No. We don’t have anything like that. Um, have you tried … looking on the ground?
\nQ: Oh … but, well, I wouldn’t want them to be, you know: dirty.<\/p>\n
