To Own!<\/h2>\n

To own! to own!
\nMy god, I\u2019ve got to own!
\nEverywhere I look I see
\nsomething I\u2019ve got to own!
\nNo matter if I\u2019m shopping
\nor just peering \u2018neath a stone;
\neverywhere I look I see
\nsomething I\u2019ve got to own:<\/p>\n

A box, a book, a pickled fig,
\na plaque, a checkered flag,
\na shepherd\u2019s crook, a fricassee,
\na goldfish in a bag,
\na coin, a car, a dimpled kid,
\na foreign flat, a sock,
\na statue of a monkey
\nwith its hands upon –
\nTo own! to own!
\nYou see, I\u2019ve got to own.
\nMy greed has got the best of me
\n-it won\u2019t leave me alone.
\nI’ve tried to stop by hiding out,
\njust staying here at home;
\nit found me on the internet,
\nit got me on the phone.<\/p>\n

An egg, a rock, a glockenspiel,
\na portmanteau, a cleat,
\na croquet set, a cracker box,
\na ticket for a seat,
\na plaque, a jack, a whirligig,
\na singing plastic bass,
\na portrait of a fellow
\nwith his head stuck up –
\nTo own! to own!
\nOh, how I\u2019ve got to own!
\nOnce I see something I like
\nmy av\u2019rice can\u2019t be thrown.
\nWhatever can be held or smelled
\nor dug or built or sewn
\nor seen or heard or lied about
\nI must possess alone!<\/p>\n

A pen, a cart, a candy gram,
\na ha-ha fence, a tree,
\na ham, a cat, a knurled knob,
\nsome pills that make you pee,
\na boat, a coat, a spool of thread,
\na wooden decoy duck:
\nit doesn\u2019t matter what I buy,
\nI do not give –
\nTo own! To own!
\nThe feeling\u2019s only grown!
\nI\u2019ve never cared for renting things
\nor taking them on loan,
\nyet when my monthly statement comes
\nI hang my head and moan,
\nfor everywhere I look I see
\nsomething I\u2019ve got to own!<\/p>\n
